Sunday Jun 23, 2024
In this compelling episode of The Next Steps Show, we delve into the urgent and intricate issues that shape our world today. Our discussion begins with the critical state of global biodiversity. With over 40,000 species currently threatened, including 41% of amphibians, 26% of mammals, and 14% of birds, we explore the diverse approaches to conservation that aim to protect our planet’s fragile ecosystems.
Moving beyond the environment, we navigate into the complex terrain of cultural and societal debates. Recently, the Vatican released a thought-provoking document addressing abortion, surrogacy, and gender theory. NPR's Jason DeRose offers insights into how these issues intersect with faith and contemporary societal values. This discussion is particularly timely as it illuminates the balancing act between adhering to traditional teachings and embracing the evolving understanding of identity and human rights.
The conversation takes an intriguing turn when a caller’s comment about racial disparities in littering sparks a broader examination of societal values. Have we, as a society, shifted from ideals of faith, innovation, and growth towards dependency and a sense of victimhood? This question leads us to scrutinize the resilience of constitutional principles and the core values of God, country, and family in today's rapidly changing world.
As we reflect on these cultural shifts, we emphasize the critical importance of meaningful dialogue. In a time where societal values are continually being challenged, engaging in open and thoughtful conversation is more essential than ever. It’s through these discussions that we can foster understanding, navigate complexities, and strive for a future that upholds our cherished ideals.
We invite you to be a leader, to engage with us, and to share your perspectives. Next Steps Show Featuring Spencer Chretien 4-5-24
Sunday May 05, 2024
Sunday May 05, 2024
In this episode, we are privileged to welcome a distinguished figure in political circles, Hon Spencer Chretien. Currently serving as the Associate Director of the 2025 Presidential Transition Project at The Heritage Foundation and a former Special Assistant to President Donald J. Trump, Chretien brings a wealth of expertise from his extensive background in government and policy-focused organizations. With a graduate degree from Hillsdale College’s James Madison Fellowship, his insights into political appointee placement and public policy are both deep and nuanced.
Spencer Chretien's journey beyond his professional accolades begins in a small town, where early on, he was taught the values of hard work and perseverance. These principles have guided him through various roles in government, shaping his vision and strategy.
One of the key areas Chretien focuses on is the so-called "administrative state," often dubbed the "fourth branch" of government. This term refers to the vast network of agencies and bureaucrats who implement and enforce federal regulations, operating with significant autonomy from the established branches of government. Chretien explains that the extensive power wielded by the administrative state can often dilute the effectiveness of policies, prompting the need for strategic alignment and reform.
Chretien notes that aligning staff with specific ideologies has been a perennial challenge. The bureaucratic system inherently leans towards progressivism, creating a barrier to implementing reforms. This mismatch has historically led to inefficiencies and stalled policy initiatives, which administrations have had to navigate carefully.
Addressing these challenges, the 2025 Presidential Transition Project aims to reduce the influence of the administrative state by streamlining government operations. The project's strategy includes identifying key bureaucratic positions for specific appointees and pushing for regulatory reforms that enhance government efficiency.
Chretien emphasizes that a critical part of this strategy is based on Econometrica's findings, which suggest that Democratic presidents tend to staff their administrations with ideologically aligned appointees more effectively than their Republican counterparts. In response, the project is improving their vetting processes and developing data-driven approaches to ensure that their appointees can effectively carry out the administration's agenda.
One of the most crucial actions to counteract the influence of the so-called Deep State, according to Chretien, involves reforming hiring and firing practices within the federal government. Gaining control over these processes allows leaders to implement their policies more effectively and ensures greater accountability within the bureaucracy.
Chretien also highlights the significant impact of Senate confirmation delays and internal conflicts, which can severely impede the administration's ability to function optimally. These delays prevent key positions from being filled timely, slowing down the implementation of critical policies.
The "Mandate for Leadership" serves as a blueprint for governance, providing a comprehensive guide for policy and personnel decisions. This document is pivotal for ensuring that every layer of the federal apparatus fosters a coherent policy direction across the administration.
Looking forward, Chretien discusses measures to strengthen future policies against bureaucratic resistance, including implementing stricter oversight mechanisms and enhancing transparency within federal agencies. These steps are essential for reducing resistance and ensuring that appointees have the necessary authority to make impactful decisions.
Through this engaging and insightful discussion with Hon Spencer Chretien, we gain a clearer understanding of the strategic preparations underway within the political movement. As they gear up for more streamlined and ideologically coherent governance, the impact on the political landscape promises to be substantial, marking a pivotal moment in the evolution of this political philosophy.

Next Steps Show with Host Peter Vazquez 4-4-24
Sunday Apr 14, 2024
Sunday Apr 14, 2024
Within the hallowed halls of the New York Assembly, a vigorous debate on criminal justice reform is underway, underscored by the somber backdrop of NYPD officer Jonathan Diller's tragic death. Republicans, resolute in their commitment to law and order, are pushing for stringent penalties and the reinstatement of the death penalty for the most heinous crimes, confronting Democrats who doubt the efficacy of such severe measures.
Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie and his colleagues advocate for softer alternatives like community policing and rehabilitation programs. Research from the National Institute of Justice offers a mixed perspective: while incarceration deters some from reoffending, it may paradoxically increase recidivism among those further hardened by prison life, with evidence suggesting only modest reductions in violent crime.
The controversy surrounding the proposed ban on specific types of batteries for electric scooters and the like sparks a larger discussion on the nature of advocacy. This raises a poignant question: Is advocacy genuinely valued only when it aligns with one's personal or political biases? Such debates are particularly resonant in an era where environmental and technological considerations intersect significantly with policy decisions.
A notable shift in legislative focus is apparent with New York's move to decriminalize adultery, aiming to dismantle a law established in 1907. This measure, which garnered substantial bipartisan support in both the Assembly and Senate, mirrors a societal shift towards a more lenient view on personal morality. The overwhelming approval signifies a growing consensus on removing such private matters from the purview of the criminal justice system.
In managing cannabis regulation through the Marijuana Regulation & Taxation Act of 2021, New York intended to foster a safe, inclusive, and economically prosperous market. Nevertheless, the state grapples with challenges such as the sluggish deployment of legal dispensaries and persistent illegal sales.
Governor Kathy Hochul's administration has confiscated over 8,500 pounds of illegal cannabis products, underscoring the hurdles in suppressing unlicensed operations. Even with legalization, discrepancies persist in NYPD's arrest records, highlighting an ongoing need for enforcement in the evolving regulatory landscape.
Our discussion today also scrutinizes the fundamental responsibility of elected officials to champion the interests of their constituents. Amidst the complexities of partisan politics and the sway of special interests, the essential role of these representatives in shaping democratic governance remains critical, manifesting a dynamic interplay of policy-making and public advocacy.
We delve into these multifaceted topics, exploring the nuances of law and the progression of public advocacy. We invite you to engage with us, share your insights, and contribute to this vital conversation in our next episode.

Next Steps Show Featuring Jordan Stenzel 4-3-24
Sunday Apr 14, 2024
Sunday Apr 14, 2024
Welcome to today’s episode of the Next Steps Show with Peter Vazquez. We have a special guest, el Señor Jordan Stenzel, a committed single parent running for the Greece Central School Board. With deep roots in public health and education, Señor Stenzel is passionate about enriching the district with enhanced safety measures, better resources, and a stronger sense of community.
In our conversation, Señor Stenzel shares alarming statistics that highlight the urgency for action: during the 2019-2020 school year, 84% of public schools reported incidents of violence or theft, totaling 1.4 million incidents. This data underscores the critical need for stricter safety protocols and more robust security resources to ensure a safe learning environment—a foundational element for student success and wellbeing.
Turning to academic enhancement, Stenzel discusses disparities in student performance within the district. With only 45% of students reaching proficiency in English Language Arts as per recent assessments, he advocates for targeted initiatives to improve literacy and math skills. Programs like the American Reading Company have shown promising results in boosting literacy, suggesting that similar strategies could be implemented to strengthen math education.
Señor Stenzel is also a proponent of community schools, which integrate academics with essential services to support holistic development. These schools have been linked to improved attendance and academic achievement, and he aims to expand these programs within the district.
As the conversation shifts to career preparation, Stenzel highlights the success of Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs, which boast a 93% graduation rate. He sees great potential in expanding these opportunities, preparing students for a dynamic workforce by fostering new partnerships and finding innovative funding solutions.
The topic of sustainability surfaces with the discussion of an electric bus mandate. Despite higher upfront costs, electric buses promise significant long-term savings. However, infrastructure and initial investment are substantial hurdles. Stenzel advocates for a balanced approach that considers both environmental benefits and financial realities.
Support for educators is another critical issue for Stenzel, noting that about 8% of teachers leave the profession each year. He stresses the importance of providing adequate resources and support to retain quality educators, which in turn enhances student learning and stabilizes school environments.
Engaging families and listening to students are at the heart of Stenzel’s platform. He believes that active family and community engagement leads to higher academic achievement and better student behavior. By prioritizing the voices of families and students, schools can create a more inclusive and responsive educational environment.
El señor Stenzel addresses fiscal responsibility and the need for transparent budgeting to ensure resources are used efficiently without overburdening taxpayers. He also touches on the nationwide shortage of bus drivers, which affects over half of the districts in the U.S. and calls for community-driven solutions to ensure reliable transportation for all students.
Join us as Señor Stenzel shares his vision for transforming the Greece Central School District into a beacon of learning, safety, and community collaboration. It’s an insightful discussion on how dedicated leadership can make a real difference in the educational landscape.

Sunday Apr 14, 2024
Welcome to this episode of the Next Steps Show with Peter Vazquez. We explore the intricate and pivotal world of permits, licenses, and constitutional freedoms, weaving through the fabric of public order and personal rights in the United States.
We begin by delving into the civic backbone of our communities: permits and licenses. These documents are more than just bureaucratic paperwork; they are the safeguards of our health, safety, and welfare. From building permits ensuring structural safety to business licenses confirming legal operations, each permit and license serves as a checkpoint that upholds stringent standards and regulations. They ensure that every construction beam is secure, and every restaurant meal is safe, reflecting a society committed to order and legality.
As we navigate through the city's structured pathways, we dive into the realm of the U.S. Constitution, focusing on the First and Second Amendments—two pillars that uphold the mighty structure of American democracy. The First Amendment guarantees fundamental freedoms: speech, press, religion, assembly, and the right to petition the government. It is the cornerstone of a democratic society, fostering an environment where ideas and beliefs are freely exchanged and where the government remains accountable to the people.
The Second Amendment, with its guarantee of the right to keep and bear arms, stands as a testament to the complex interplay between individual freedoms and public safety. Its historical roots in the necessity of a militia morph into modern debates over gun control and personal defense, reflecting a society that values both its security and its liberties.
Throughout the episode, we also touch on how the broader constitutional framework promotes equality and inclusivity, with amendments and Supreme Court rulings that have expanded the rights and protections of all citizens. These changes illustrate the Constitution’s role as a living document, evolving to meet new challenges and societal shifts. As we discuss landmark rulings and current debates, we reveal how this living document continuously adapts, ensuring relevance in the face of changing societal values and technologies.
Join Peter Vazquez as we uncover the essential roles that regulation and constitutional rights play in shaping American life and governance, providing a narrative that links the structured world of permits and licenses with the dynamic and evolving nature of constitutional rights. This is a journey through the frameworks that not only structure our physical world but also define our rights and freedoms within it.

Sunday Apr 14, 2024
We spotlight Gary Stout, a dedicated champion of quintessential American principles such as faith, patriotism, and family. His advocacy highlights the critical role of the First and Second Amendments in safeguarding freedom and justice. These constitutional protections not only embody the spirit of American democracy but also reinforce the values that Stout passionately upholds in his commitment to the nation's foundational ideals.
The First Amendment safeguards freedoms essential to a democratic society: religion, speech, press, assembly, and petitioning the government. These protections allow for open discourse, religious practice, media freedom, and public accountability without fear of government retaliation.
Public opinion holds these freedoms in high regard. A 2019 Pew Research survey revealed that 77% of Americans consider freedom of speech crucial. Similarly, a Gallup poll in 2020 found that 72% of Americans deem religion important in their lives. The U.S. is ranked 45th in the 2020 World Press Freedom Index, reflecting a commitment to press freedom but highlighting areas needing improvement, such as the challenging legal and political climate journalists face, including SLAPPs and hostile rhetoric.
The Second Amendment's right to bear arms is seen as a means for self-defense, a deterrent against tyranny, and essential for national defense. About 30% of Americans own a gun, and 44% live in households with guns, illustrating the amendment's deep-rooted significance.
Both amendments are foundational to American democracy, promoting a culture that values liberty, personal freedom, and governmental accountability. They are integral in shaping a society that encourages debate and protects individual rights, ensuring a robust democratic process.
